Prof.Dr.Mathews Plamoottil
Prof.Dr.Mathews Plamoottil, the esteemed Principal of our college, is a distinguished researcher in zoology, specialising in the taxonomy of freshwater fish. With a PhD in zoology and 17.6 years of academic experience, he has significantly advanced his field. He successfully completed a major research project (Core Research Grant) funded by the SERB, Government of India, amounting to ₹24.6 lakh, demonstrating his commitment and expertise.
Prof.Dr.Mathews Plamoottil's numerous accolades include the Best Researcher Award from the Kerala State Biodiversity Board and the Best Ecologist Award from the Society for Educational and Scientific Research, Kerala. He is a life member of the Indian Science Congress Association and the Marine Biological Association of India, highlighting his active engagement in the scientific community.
As a freshwater fish taxonomist, Prof.Dr.Mathews Plamoottil has discovered and named 35 new fish species, all registered with Zoobank by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN). He has DNA-sequenced and uploaded data of 29 fish species to GenBank, securing accession numbers for them. His extensive research has led to the publication of 74 first author articles in scientific journals and the rediscovery of 11 fish species that had been forgotten for over 150 years.
Prof.Dr.Mathews Plamoottil's research is primarily conducted in the freshwater bodies of Kerala, other parts of India, and Myanmar. He has also contributed popular scientific articles to Malayalam magazines, enhancing public understanding of zoology.
